Los Altos High School Cross Country

Our Values
1. We Mean Business!
2. We Have Fun!
3. We are a Team!

1. We Mean  Business

We are a competitive cross country racing team.

We are here to improve ourselves in the pursuit of representing Los Altos High School in competition. While that does not mean everybody will make the varsity top 7, we expect all our athletes to aspire to that and compete for the division for which they run (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Frosh-Soph).
“Res Severa Verum Gaudia” (To be serious is the greatest joy)
- favorite saying of Mark Wetmore (CU Boulder coach), to which he adds...

“What joy is there in being cavalier about your life or your endeavors? You should take your life, your joy, your endeavors, seriously.” - Mark Wetmore, UC Boulder
What this means:

Talk to any varsity runner… team members come out here to work hard, to improve and to get faster. Make no mistake, Cross Country is hard work. There are much easier ways to get PE credit. If you have doubts about pushing yourself or running 30 miles a week, you should not be out here. This sport is hard - among the hardest training regimens of all sports. You get faster by getting more fit which means running miles and doing hard workouts. Its tough, and there is camaraderie and honor in that.

Athletes on the team have a serious and respectful attitude toward training and practice.  Everybody out here will tell you:
  • Be a good person: respectful, positive, compassionate.
  • Do show up on time ready to work hard.
  • Do not miss a meet.
  • Do not miss practice without a real excuse. Do not leave early. Do the cool downs and the stretching that prevents injury
  • Track your mileage on XCStats.
  • Do get an xcstats.com account
  • Do encourage and support your teammates in practice and workouts.
  • Do talk to your coaches about how you’re feeling, injuries, your workouts.
  • Do set high standards for yourself and your teammates
  • Come to practice on Saturdays.

During practice or meets, when it’s time to get busy, we get busy with... no goofing around, no distracting behavior and no lollygagging. If you treat the practice with respect, it will reward you in improved performance and improved focus

2. We Have Fun

But we also will have a ton of fun!

Running and working hard together with people you like is fun. Competition is fulfilling. Socializing and hanging out is an important part of the team. Cross Country is one of (the only?) co-ed sport which makes it very fun and easy to socialize. The team will have several pasta feed and we’ll have some surprise chocolate milk days for a refreshing boost after workout. Our varsity travel trips are a blast!

3. We Are a Team

Cross country is one of the most engaging team sports. You might think that individuals are out there racing for their own times, but XC runners are the most committed you'll find to winning meets and placing at CCS.

LAHS XC runners support each other: during practice, together in races and when the racing is done. We are a close knit team and we respect each other.
